WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — In a Thursday session with Obama and other participants in the Nuclear Security Summit in Washington, DC, Hollande said, "But we're also well aware that the roots of terrorism, Islamist terrorism, is in Syria and in Iraq," according to a White House transcript included in the MRC post.
However, when watching the video, the sound cuts off several seconds when Holland mentions Islam and terrorism in the same sentence.
Obama has banned any reference to Islam by members of his administration when discussing terrorism. The rule has been criticized by Republicans in the US Congress and elsewhere, who accuse the president of weakness in fighting the so-called Daesh terror group.
Critics frequently use the term "Islamist terrorism," claiming that it reflects an understanding that jihadists are motivated by a perverted interpretation of Islam, as opposed to ordinary criminals.
The MRC post also contains a screen shot of a subsequent notice on the White House website saying the video has been removed.
